Amelia's First Day High School and Jaxon's 18th Birthday

Our youngest daughter started High School today, she was so excited she could have bounced off the walls here until we left...
I had to take a photo or two of her in her uniform...Her brother and his girlfriend and a friend all wanted to take her to school too...so it became kinda a family affair....Wayne had to leave early this morning for work so didn't get to see her off so he rang to wish her luck...

She is looking so grown up....no I will not get nostalgic....5 years and I'm free of the schooling years (my new mantra)..lol
She may have left for school all energised but boy was she tired when she got home...

Now to Jaxon's birthday, you won't believe what these young adults have done today...You may be thinking drinking, smoking, loud music, etc well you would be wrong...
Today he had about 10 friends make it to our house and they have played games, cooked, swam in the pool and played pool and laughed with each other...it has been the tamest 18th party I have ever seen...I have offered several times to pick something up from the pub for them but they have insisted they are fine and are quite happy as they are....It just seems so unnatural to turn 18 and not have at least one drink to mark the occassion. Don't get me wrong I am not complaining, its just not what I was expecting..It has been nice seeing Jaxon and his friends be contented with socializing without feeling the need to add alcohol to the mix...very mature, and yes I am feeling very proud at the moment...I especially liked it when they all put their four cents in to make the mince mixture for nachos, oh no sir-ee, all real ingredients here no tin food allowed...lol
Anyhow check out his birthday cake...Baskin Robbins Cookies and Cream Ice-cream Cake...yum
There is a story to add here about this cake...Wayne and I left Jimboomba yesterday and being locals knew the back roads we could take that could get us out of Jimboomba (seeing as most roads were under water)...Anyway we got out and picked this ice-cream cake up (praying the whole time that Baskin Robbins hadn't lost their power and that our order was waiting for us..we turned the air-con up in the car as it was very hot and humid and headed home.  Well the police had closed off the only way back in that we knew of..here we were with an ice-cream cake sitting on my lap and being told to turn around, that our way back was now flooded too...We joked a little about the fact that we wouldn't starve but it was not a nice feeling knowing the kids were the other side of the water and we couldn't get to them...So then the hunt began, I was trying to find someone home that I knew that could accommodate this cake, and Wayne was trying to work out another way back...Several phone calls later and lots of different roads taken we finally found another way back...So when I say that tonight when Jaxon cut his cake, he doesn't realise how close he came to not getting it at all...I think that being all together made that cake more sweeter than it actually was.

Here is Jaxon with one of his mates...Aaron - he shares the same birthday as Jaxon, so Jaxon insisted that he cut the cake too.  So both Jaxon and Aaron had Happy Birthday sung to them and they both blew out the candle and both got to cut the cake...Another proud moment seeing my son insist on sharing his happiness with a friend...
Aaron has been one of the unfortunate people around here that has had no power for three days, so it was good to see him smile on his birthday.

Aaron on the left and Jaxon on the right..
Thats all for now, hopefully I will be able to get back to a more normal life and tomorrow will be able to get some sewing done.

Just a couple of flood photos..

Yesterday Hubby and myself had another look at the local flooding...the water had risen higher than anything we have seen before in this area..
Just letting people know - we are safe, power has been restored to most homes, including Helen's and as far as I can tell no one in the area has water in their homes..
They must have built this town the right way, all our local shops are up high and no water has entered them, just loss of power and workers unable to get in..  Woollies as of yesterday had no bread or milk left but were able to function with a generator.  I am hoping the post office is open today because I have some secret sewing to post off (this is causing me a little stress - as I don't want to disappoint anyone)...We are also meant to be hosting an 18th birthday party for our son today, we have left it open to whoever can get through and hopefully I can find somewhere this morning that has party food items to feed them..lol  We have talked about cancelling it until later but most of his mates have been looking forward to a change from the floods and power problems...(His mates have been calling in for showers etc in the last couple of days seeing as we were lucky enough to keep power).  One of the downfalls (only small downfall) of living in a rural area is when the power goes out so does our pumps - this means no water, no flushing toilets, no showers, no coffees, as well as the usual problems of having no power (like all the chocolates melts...lol).  Anyhow the kids are in here annoying me now - Amelia starts the first day of high school today and she is excited just a lot and Jaxon and his girlfriend want to start getting things ready for his party (they have actually cleaned out his wardrobe and room) ...I will add some photos of today up much later this arve...but for now here are some more flood photo's and please don't worry about us - we are safe, dry and getting ready to party...

Anyhow, that will do for now, thank you to all for all your messages, it makes Australia seem like just a suburb with everyone close by....cya

Local Flooding Update

Just went down the road to check the Mt Lindsey Highway to see if it is still open....what do you think....maybe not...
If you look in the distance on the first photo you can see the headlights of a vehicle (between the gap in the trees) hopefully just checking it out like we were...
Helen still has no power but is safe and dry and Cassie (Teresa) I am presuming is cut off because of flooded roads.  My mobile phone is not working but I have power.
Cassie do you have power?
Will let you know if anything changes....

12 Months of Christmas...January

I am doing a stitch-a-long with Suzi of Stitch Scrap Sew and once a month we are stitching a project for christmas - this is so, as I do regularly, leave everything to the last minute and then don't have time to get projects done in time for christmas...
We have a general theme for the month (which can be adapted to our own theme) where we work on
our item...this month is anything we want to finish...which brings me to my project - The Tuesday Girls will vouch for me when I say that I was stitching these tags last year with the intent on having them done for christmas 2012...mmm as you can see I didn't get them done in time but now they are ready for this christmas 2013...thanks Suzi for helping me get organised..  Now lets see...next month is a Tree Skirt...what one should I do, there are so many to choose from...No not going to tell - you will just have to wait for next month...lol
I have not added the ribbons to the tags because I am not sure how I will use them so will add that later...cya later...xx

What a week...

First of all, I have been getting my goodies ready for the Friends In Stitching Donation parcels for the fire victims in Tasmania, these donations consist of a sewing bag with some sewing essential items that may just brighten up someone elses day...
This is what I have made and I also have some other items to add to it...needles, sissors, fat quarters...etc

Secondly, I have received a parcel from Melody for being part of the Summertime Stitch-A-Long, it consists of a variety of woolfelts in beautiful colours..and I cant wait to use them, thank you heaps Melody....I have completed my first block (as you can see from my previous post) in cotton and will continue using cotton throughout the quilt...So now I can hear you asking..what is she going to do with the woolfelt?? Well as seeing I wont need it for the Stitch-A-Long, I plan on choosing one of the blocks from Summertime to use as a Mini 12" quilt (because the only one I do have is a christmas one) and I want to use these beautiful pieces for it.  They are going to be perfect for this...

Now what else have I done this week....lots of none sewing things....
My husband and the kids helped move my mother from Brisbane to Hervey Bay (4 hours drive for those who don't know - one way)..It was exhausting, so hot and muggy, we have all felt very worn out since then...not as young as I use to be..takes longer to recover from something like this...
I have also been doing a little secret sewing...more about that later.
I have finish collecting my daughters year 8 uniforms and school books, why can't they all be at the same place...I had to go to three different stores for the books...
I took my son to the dentist, babysat my 11month old grandson 3 days, met with the Tuesday Girls on Tuesday and the Beaudesert Quilter's Group on Wednesday and had 5 doctors appointments, and this was only in the course of one week, so if I say that all I want to do this weekend is sleep, you will understand why....and I think I need some chocolate too....cya all...

Summertime

I have just finished my first Summertime block for Melody's stitch-a-long....it has been a little different stitching with a black background and plain coloured fabrics but I like how it is turning out..
I am doing mine in cottons, not the wool felt as recommended by the designer, and most of my coloured fabrics are from the range - Shadowplay.  I love shadowplay, their colours are beautiful and I have had a stash of them  in which I have not been able to bring myself to cut into until I found the right project, and they are just perfect for this pattern..Sorry the photo is not showing their full colour, must be because it is not very sunny here yet...

That's another 'done' for this months TO DO LIST.....I'm on a roll....cya

I have had quite indepth chats with Dulcie with regards to the bush fires and heatwave and we are hoping all our friends are safe and well....Bring on winter - we have had enough of summer.

Good start to the year...

Farmer's Wife Quilt - Block 1
I am right on schedule -ok so I have only done one block so far but I will get there...I ran a stitch around the outside because I kinda figured it was going to be hanging around for a while waiting for its mates to join it...

Harvest Festival - Block 1
I have been thinking about this BOM since receiving my first installment in November, but I knew I needed to wait until after christmas to start it..
This is my first applique block and four pieced blocks....I love the fabrics and cant wait to start the next block.

And last but not least - I have done some hexie flowers....not sure what I want to do with them yet, but I want to just keep adding to them until I decide...

Thats all today.....hope everyone is not suffering too much with the high temperatures at the moment..

What is on the table for 2013

Ok girls, I have just updated my sidebar to show some of the projects I am planning to do this year..

First of all I plan on starting the Farmer's Wife Quilt...so if anyone out their would like to check on how I am going then please feel free to visit my blog...I hope to do at least one block per month (this could take forever but I have other commitments and this will at least get me started).. Maybe I could even pop over to your blog if you are attempting this one too.

Secondly, I have joined Melody's Summertime Stitch-A-Long, so if anyone out there wants to join in then please contact Melody here..
I know, I can hear you saying it already, boy is she keen...well I have it on good authority (Melody herself) that there is no deadlines, no pressure, just a casual stitch-a-long..I don't even have to make the whole quilt - I could turn some of my blocks into mini quilts if I wish...I am thinking of doing the black background fabric in cotton and not wool - mental note - still need to buy background fabric..lol
See, how easy does that sound,  and you thought I was nuts, well to tell you the truth I am, but we will keep that between just me and you..

And thirdly,  I am going to start my BOM - Harvest Festival by Jenelle Kent, sent out by Pieces To Treasure...I fell in love with this quilt at the Brisbane Quilt Show in October and knew I just had to have it..
Helen - if you are reading this - I plan on doing this one in the needleturn style...time to put all your
wonderful teaching and tips into practice...hopefully I can make you proud...if not - oh well, tough titties...at least I will give it a go...  Sorry I dont have a good photo of this one...

Anyhow girls...this is my plan for this year....along with alot of other sewing (dolls, swaps, gifts, christmas, family, etc, etc) ...and yes I am nuts but I think I cover that fact up enough that no-one will know...
So what is everyone else planning for this year???...is there anyone as nuts as I am or am I the only one out there....

Now what to do next....

Hello 2013

Boy it only seems like yesterday that it was 2012, what fond memories of that year....lotsa laughs, stitching and gatherings....
But one cannot linger in the past, it is time to move forward..
This is how I spent the first day of 2013..
A little UFO sewing - Fernhill. I am trying to knuckle down and get this one finished...this is my progress so far..

And a little scrapbooking...
This is how my little book started its life..very plain and boring..

And this is how it looks now...I had a rosette left over from a previous project, so decided to use it as my tree top decoration...I still need to add some more binder rings to finish it off ( just couldn't think of somewhere open at 9 o'clock at night that would stock them..lol), I will add them to my list of needs on my next day out...

Here are the internal pages...

Now seeing you have made it this far, I will give you an insight as to how this creative person works..
WITH A BIG MESS....It was so hot yesterday that I closed myself off in my bedroom, turned on the TV (Wacthed "Call The Midwife" - Brilliant little series by the way, set in the 1950's), and worked in there....this is what part, and I do mean part, of what my bed looked like during my creative moment...I am sooo lucky hubby doesn't mind occassions like this..

Thats all for today, and yes the mess is cleaned up....now what will I do today...cya
